NIMTECH - social inclusion

The problems of social exclusion can be both serious and far reaching, affecting not only individuals but entire communities and limiting the potential for both economic and social development. Recognising this, NIMTECH has developed a highly effective model for engaging disadvantaged and socially excluded groups in commercially self sustaining ventures.

The EMPRISE model was originally piloted in Blackpool, where people who had suffered long term unemployment have been recruited, trained and employed to deliver socially and environmentally beneficial services to the local business community. Initially, this took the form of a new trade waste collection and recycling service aimed at hotels, restaurants and other businesses, but it was soon apparent that the same training and public procurement mechanisms could be applied to enable the scheme to deliver other important services and, in so doing, to create even more jobs.

This award winning project is designed to foster new social enterprises that are managed by their own employees and trainees – creating new opportunities for people who would otherwise have found themselves on the margins of the world of work. This essential concept renders the EMPRISE model highly versatile and applicable to a wide variety of socio-economic conditions. For this reason, it is now being examined by several other public authorities across the UK and is being prepared for launch as a package for the European market.
