Greening Blackpool

As part of the EMPRISE Blackpool programme, NIMTECH has recently been working in partnership with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust to breathe new life into Blackpool’s suburbs. Together, the two organisations have overseen a tree planting scheme that has encompassed seven sites across the town.

Over the space of a week, members of the Wildlife Trust’s Environmental Task Force planted more than 3,000 young, native trees including – amongst others – willow, oak, birch and ash. Individual species were specially selected to suit the different conditions of the various sites, which range from grassland to coppiced woodland. The work was partly funded by Blackpool Challenge Partnership and by EMPRISE Blackpool itself, which recently won £1,000 as the top prize for ‘Best New Project’ in the Red Rose Recycling Awards. It has used some of this prize money to purchase the young trees and to support the Environmental Task Force in its efforts to help local unemployed people to gain valuable experience and find new jobs.

“We are delighted to be working with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust on a project that will have such wide ranging benefits,” said NIMTECH managing director David Bowker. “Growing trees helps reduce green house gases, creates valuable new habitats and improves the look of the town’s green spaces. In addition, the project has also helped to provide experience and new opportunities for people who are working hard to find a way back into employment.

“Most people know EMPRISE as a trade waste recycling service but we’re glad to have the chance to show people that there is more to EMPRISE besides recycling glass, metal, paper and cardboard. Other important aspects of what we do include supporting new employment and helping to improve living conditions for local residents.”

EMPRISE is a European ERDF-funded programme that is being piloted in Blackpool with the support of Blackpool Council, Blackpool Challenge Partnership and various private sector partners. Further information about the project can be obtained by calling Hilary Dennison on 01253 478030 or by visiting the EMPRISE website – www.emprise.org.uk.
